As a new vehicle owner or a prospective one, if you want to set yourself off the shackles of FRSC and LASTMA agents on the road, you MUST have at least Six (6) of these IMPORTANT CAR DOCUMENTS in your vehicle.
Truth is, a lot of people don’t know the exact documents they need to have in their vehicles so I’ll be sharing this information I got from my twin (Augustus Ibechem) who is yet to be a car owner…lol…But the information is very valid and the engagement was very apt; I just had to share with the world.
Below are the six (6) IMPORTANT CARS DOCUMENTS that FRSC and LASTMA agents look out for:
1. Driver's License
This card/document is very important. It's obviously the first and the most common document they'll ask for once they stop any driver on the road.
Do you have a driver's license? Is it expired?
So, whatever you do, make sure your driver's license is up to date.
2. Proof of Ownership

2. Proof of Ownership
This document is also very important. As a vehicle owner, you need a valid proof of ownership. This document should be among your car registration papers given to you at the Vehicle Inspection Office. Please make sure you have this document after purchasing your car.
One more thing, if you bought the car as "Nigerian used", biko don't forget to get a change of ownership form. You will definitely need it and also make enough photocopies of the change of ownership form.
3. Insurance Certificate

3. Insurance Certificate
As a car owner, your car needs to be insured.
Last time I checked, to get your insurance certificate, you need to find your way to the licensing office or NICON Insurance with the sum of 5,000 Naira to have it done (I'm not 100% sure of the amount, it can be more) but one thing is for sure, "FRSC/LASTMA should not catch you without this document else na wahala you enter be that because you will pay a good fine of 10,000 Naira (so I heard)." Do everything you can to get a comprehensive insurance for your vehicle.
4. Vehicle License or Registration

4. Vehicle License or Registration
Every vehicle owner MUST possess this document. It is a good and clearest way to prove that the vehicle in your possession is registered under the Nigerian law. This document needs to be renewed annually so make sure it is up to date anytime you are on the road else them go use you as fresh fish come chop better point and kill for your head.
5. Certificate of Road Worthiness
5. Certificate of Road Worthiness
If you don't want any perturbance from VIO (Vehicle Inspection Officer) agents and other traffic officials, please make sure you have a “Certificate of Road Worthiness” in your possession at all times.
The certificate of road worthiness is that document that discloses if your car is fit to be on the road for a certain period of time. You can have it renewed annually.
6. Outside the documents I've previously mentioned, you also need to have the following in your vehicle - a functioning fire extinguisher, a good spare tyre and a good car jack. It will have you astound that these traffic officials also check out for them.
Also, there are some optional but important documents you should also have and they are: Learner’s permit, Tint permit and Hackney permit (this applies to only commercial vehicles)
