THE ACCIDENTAL ECONOMIST: Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

Prior to the selection process for the next World Trade Organization's Director General; I got chatting with some folks online about Madam Ngozi. So, I decided to do some reading about her and trust me, I was blown away by what I was able to gather and what others also told me about her.

Join me on this short and precise journey about Madam Ngozi:

Do you know she was raised by her grandmother? Yes, you read it well. This was because her parents were studying abroad during those periods. So you can see that this 'book-thing' dey inside the family blood……..what we tagged as Genetics….lol. So, when she eventually reunited with her parents; She held on to them so tight and never to let go ever again.

Based on the information gathered; Ngozi always wanted her father's attention and this need for attention led to a "Quirk" that changed her life!.....What some of us tagged as Accident.

Meanwhile, her father was a lecturer at the University of Ibadan- A Mathematical Economist who was working on a particular article that faithful period and didn't want any disturbance but the little girl (Ngozi) needed her father's attention at all times. So, Papa Ngozi picked a book off his shelf and gave it her to read the first chapter that he would ask her some questions afterwards. Filled with so much excitement, Ngozi happily ran off to read the book as she has succeeded in getting her father's attention.

Accidentally, the book turned out to be a book in "Economics". According to her, it was so boring and she didn't enjoy it one bit. But because she wanted to impress her Dad and also be able to answer any questions her Dad was going to ask her; She went ahead to read the book and promised herself  NEVER to read or study the course called "Economics"……lol………wahala.

At age 18, Ngozi had already passed her entrance exams into Cambridge and Harvard University respectively (with Cambridge University being her first choice shaaa). She actually chose Cambridge University because she wanted to study "Geography".

Accidentally, something happened. Her mother had just gained admission into Boston University as at that time for her Ph.D. and as a young teenager; It will be safe, homely and better to stay with her Mother. Ngozi had no choice but to go for "Harvard" which is in Boston and also close to her Mother.

I know you will say what sort of accident is that again?.....lol….just follow me on this journey, we are going somewhere….lol….chill and drink water then drop your cup….Let’s Go!

So, on getting to Harvard, Ngozi wasn’t offered her preferred course which was "Geography". Thus, the only familiar course close to satisfying her disappointment was "Economics".

So "Economics" it is!.........The same course/subject she vowed NEVER to read/study in the University eventually end up becoming the only course close to satisfying her curiosity in a University that wasn’t even her first choice of school either……..Double Accidental Discharge if you ask me…..lol.

No wonder Forbes tagged her the "Accidental Economist" in one of their articles, right?

Naaaaaah…. After going through her stories and journey to success; It was all God’s Plan. The Universe was actually pushing her towards Greatness. A very mighty vastness that the world will reckon with. It was no Accident after all. It’s all God’s plan right from the initial stage.

Las las; Thank God for Economics if you ask me:

The moral of this whole write up is that; History was made on Monday, February 15, 2021….Shikina....lol
